According to the museum, a microscopic analysis it undertook in 2017 suggests the wig was almost certainly made from human hair. And the mask’s red paint is cinnabar, explicitly described as the brick-red form of mercury sulfide, a substance frequently used in Andean funerary rituals.
So what exactly are we looking at? The object is a carved wooden mask, decorated with human hair and a textile headband, adorned an Andean mummy up to a millennium ago. The artist is attributed to the Chancay people, a pre-Inca culture that lived along Peru’s central coast during the Late Intermediate Period (1000 to 1450). The mask is not trying to be a realistic portrait. Chancay funeral masks had simplified features, including diamond-shaped eyes, a triangular nose, and a tiny U-shaped smile.
The “wig” and the mask also fit a larger Chancay funerary practice that helps explain why the head might be “missing” or misplaced. A common tradition among the Chancay was the funerary bundle: their dead were wrapped in layers of textiles, vegetal material, and animal skin. Then the bundle was buried in a pit with grave goods such as tools, food, and figurines. Because the bodies were usually wrapped in a fetal position, it was not always clear where the head was located once the bundle was complete.
That is where the idea of a “false head” comes in. The Walters Art Museum explains that false heads made from textiles or wood were sometimes tied onto Chancay funerary bundles to act as a focal point for venerating the ancestor. In other words, the mask was likely less about literal anatomy and more about social and ritual visibility, a designated “where to look” moment for remembrance.
The paint tells another part of that story. Cinnabar was used in Andean funerary rituals, and the color was associated with purification and commemoration rituals. But there is also a clue about where the mask sat during burial. The mask likely was not placed on the outside of the bundle burial. The reason: a patterned impression has been left on the cinnabar, probably from being wrapped in even more textiles, according to the Walters Art Museum.
