Ephesus twins burial: one infant had an extra rib, changing how archaeologists read death rituals
A Byzantine-era double infant grave near the Temple of Artemis suggests both genetic anomaly and baptism-era burial decisions.

Archaeologists Lilli Zabrana and Caroline Partiot analyzed premature twin infants buried in a cist near the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, reported in Childhood in the Past. One baby showed a supernumerary cervical rib, linking a hereditary trait to developmental gene anomalies researchers say can associate with prematurity and stillbirth.
Archaeologists working at Ephesus uncovered a Byzantine-era tomb holding premature twin infants, and one of the babies displayed a rare skeletal trait: an extra rib in the neck. The finding is not just medically unusual. It forces researchers to rethink how people in the 8th to 9th century handled the burial of infants who may not have been baptized, and it does that in a place with serious symbolic gravity, right beside the famed Temple of Artemis.
The burial was discovered in a stone-lined cist containing two tiny skeletons placed side by side. Based on bone size, the researchers estimated the infants were born around 33 to 34 gestational weeks, about 7.5 months in utero, and probably died around birth. The “twins” hypothesis rests on the babies’ very similar ages at death and their direct contact in burial. The researchers could not confirm twin status without future DNA analysis, but the physical setup already tells a story: this was not a random discard.
Here is the twist that makes the site matter. The cist sat inside an abandoned latrine channel. That latrine was originally built during the second or third century, but it was later added to a Roman odeum, a musical performance building constructed in the first century within the sacred area of the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. In other words, the grave ended up in a repurposed space with a complex timeline, and the location is exactly what makes the burial feel “unexpected and exceptional,” as Lilli Zabrana, an archaeologist at the Austrian Academy of Sciences and co-author of the study, said in an email to Live Science.
Why would someone place vulnerable newborns there? The team argues it looks like a “practical compromise” between Christian burial practices and local customs. Their key proposed reason is that the infants were premature and likely had not been baptized yet, which could have affected where and how they were buried. That matters because earlier burials discovered at Ephesus were typically placed in a dedicated cemetery outside the boundaries of the ancient temple. This grave breaks that pattern by bringing the dead infants into the sacred precinct, but not into the known cemetery. It is a decision that looks deliberate, not merely convenient.
What makes the story even sharper is the bone evidence. The team did not find trauma or disease on the infants’ skeletons. But one of the babies had a supernumerary cervical rib, an extra rib bone that forms at the back of the neck. This hereditary trait is seen in about 1% of people and usually does not cause problems. Still, the researchers point out something important for babies: in infants, cervical ribs have an association with anomalies in Hox genes, a group of genes that help code for specific body parts during embryonic development. Those anomalies, in turn, can lead to outcomes including stillbirth, prematurity, or sudden infant death. The authors wrote that, to their best knowledge, no cases of twins with cervical ribs had been documented in an archaeological context before this burial.
In execution terms, the site provides a rare case file for how biology and belief collide. The researchers estimated gestational timing using the size of bones, and they used the burial context to infer twin likelihood. But they also stressed the limits of the evidence: DNA analysis is required to confirm whether the infants were truly twins. That is a common tension in archaeology. You can find bodies, placement, and physical traits, but you cannot always isolate cause. Here, the team is careful: the genetics and the developmental gene associations are suggestive, not a courtroom verdict.
The team also looked for family context and did not find the mother nearby, either in the tomb or in the Ephesus cemetery. Caroline Partiot, a bioarchaeologist at the Austrian Academy of Sciences and co-author, told Live Science that it is possible she died at the same time, but it is also possible that she did not. Partiot added that both infant mortality and maternal mortality were very high at the time, which is exactly why prematurity and death could rapidly become community policy around who gets what kind of burial.
Finally, the way the skeletons were preserved argues against neglect. Zabrana said the protective cist grave preserved the twins’ skeletons for more than a millennium, which “clearly indicates that this was a respectful burial rather than the disposal of human remains.” In the researchers’ view, the tomb reveals an intention to care for the two deceased infants in death and to acknowledge their fleeting place within the community.

In modern organizations, “where to place the outliers” gets decided with incomplete information all the time.
