Gears of War: E-Day launches Oct 6, 2026 as an Xbox Series X/S exclusive
A new Unreal Engine 5 prequel about Marcus Fenix hits Xbox and PC first, with Game Pass day-one perks.

Microsoft and Xbox Game Studios, via The Coalition, are launching Gears of War: E-Day on October 6, 2026. The gritty prequel, starring Marcus Fenix and Dominic 'Dom' Santiago, is built on Unreal Engine 5 and will not release on PS5.
On October 6, 2026, Gears of War: E-Day lands as an Xbox Series X/S console exclusive, skipping PS5 entirely. The Coalition’s first mainline Gears entry since 2019 is also coming to Windows via the Xbox app and Steam, and it’s included day one for Game Pass Ultimate subscribers.
The “why should decision-makers care” answer is simple: platform exclusivity is a deliberate move, and E-Day is a high-signal test of Microsoft’s next phase in gaming after a turbulent stretch. Space.com notes Microsoft and Xbox are currently dealing with sweeping layoffs, studio cuts, and calls to boycott their products, even as extremely talented developers still ship compelling games. In that environment, a flagship franchise return is less “nostalgia tour” and more “prove the engine still runs.”
So what exactly is E-Day? It’s the series’ first chapter in the Gears timeline, built as a prequel that shows how humans on Sera first come in contact with the Locust Horde. The story lands on Emergence Day, and follows Marcus Fenix and Dominic 'Dom' Santiago as they battle through the chaos and push back against subterranean invaders. The article positions it as a Rogue One-like prequel experience, similar in spirit to Halo: Reach, while noting we already learned some E-Day context from the original Gears of War and Judgment. The big difference is that this is a “new chapter” that lets both veterans and newcomers experience the struggle directly.
The gameplay pitch is also very direct: E-Day is a third-person, cover-based shooter in the style of the previous games, with co-op and competitive multiplayer returning alongside single-player. The main campaign supports single-player, up to four players online, or two players locally via split screen. There’s an important platform-specific catch: the PC version does not feature local co-op. Those player counts also carry into Horde Siege, the PvE mode where teams fend off waves of enemies using different classes and loadouts. On the PvP side, versus multiplayer is back with all-new maps and both Social and Ranked matches. Post-launch details are not fully spelled out yet, but Space.com says it feels likely more maps will be added in the future at no extra cost.
Then there’s the production and tech angle. After Gears 5 was “not a flop,” Space.com says fan sentiment grew that the franchise needed to reevaluate by revisiting its past. With a solid remaster of the original game already out, E-Day takes another step backward in time, and it’s not a light-touch update. The article says gameplay systems, mechanics, controls, and visuals are fully rebuilt on Unreal Engine 5, with The Coalition aiming to deliver what it calls the “ultimate Gears of War experience.” In other words, this is a franchise reboot where the studio is trying to keep the vibe but modernize the feel, not just repackage older content.
The edition and launch structure looks engineered to capture multiple budgets and different buyer intentions. Three editions will be available at launch, and pre-orders are already open. Standard is $69.99 / £59.99 / €69.99 for the base game. Premium is $99.99 / £89.99 / €99.99 and includes the base game plus up to five days of early access, the Bravo Squad Signature Weapon Pack, the Emergence Customization Pack, four seasonal customization packs released post-launch, and 1,000 iron. A separate upgrade for Standard will also be sold. The Collector’s edition is $299.99, with variable regional pricing, and it includes everything in Premium plus physical items such as a collector’s display box, a 15-inch statue, replica COG tags, an exclusive steelbook case, an art piece, and an art print and thank-you note from the studio.
Pre-order bonuses add another layer, including open beta early access on August 6. Space.com lists the bonus items as the Exfil weapon set and the Exfil Dom legendary character skin. For the beta itself, there’s no E-Day demo announced “at the time of writing,” but there is an open beta. Pre-order buyers and Game Pass Ultimate subscribers can access the multiplayer test early from August 6 to 10. A second open weekend is expected at a later date, “probably the following week.” The timing is relevant because it gives publishers and studios a chance to pressure-test servers, matchmaking, and progression before launch day on October 6, 2026.
Finally, the exclusivity and platform plan closes the loop on the headline stakes. Even though last year’s remaster of the first Gears marked the series’ debut on Sony consoles, E-Day will not be releasing on PS5. Space.com notes rumors and leaked materials had pointed to a Sony launch alongside Xbox, but the full reveal in summer 2026 underlined it is an Xbox Series X/S console exclusive. For PC players, E-Day will come via the Xbox app and Steam, and Game Pass Ultimate subscribers get access day one. For executives watching platform strategy, licensing leverage, and “where the audience is,” E-Day is a clean case study: double down on where you control distribution, then broaden reach through PC and subscription.
In a year where layoffs, studio cuts, and boycott calls are headline risks, the strategic question for Microsoft, investors, and anyone funding major franchises is whether this kind of engine rebuild plus platform focus can restore confidence fast. E-Day aims to do it with a rebuilt UE5 foundation, a first-chapter-in-the-timeline story hook, and a launch plan designed to convert both console and subscription players. If that works, it becomes a template. If it doesn’t, it becomes a warning label.
