Midjourney is moving from making pictures to imaging bodies, and it’s doing it with an underwater ultrasound scanner that it says can generate 3D maps in 60 seconds. The company’s pitch is almost disturbingly simple: lower users via an “elevator” into a tub of water, use a ring of sensors to send ultrasonic waves from multiple angles, and turn the echoes into fast internal maps.
Midjourney calls the experience “as casual as a trip to the spa,” and it’s not joking about the spa part. In the same rollout, the company says it is building an accompanying spa for its San Francisco location, complete with hot tubs, saunas, and cold plunges, set to open by 2027. This is not only a new product category for Midjourney. It is also a new go-to-market strategy for healthcare: speed, comfort, and convenience bundled with medical claims, plus a consumer experience that tries to make scanning feel like wellness.
Here’s how the system works, at least according to Midjourney’s blog post. The scanner immerses users in water, and the sensors act “like a dolphin,” using echolocation. Midjourney says prototypes have generated 3D maps of the body in 60 seconds, and that the company will supply users with data “to become more aware of our health” and “improve our lifestyles.” It also describes its ultrasound approach as “as powerful as MRI,” a line that instantly raises the key issue for medical experts watching from the sidelines: ultrasound can be useful, but different modalities see different things, and fast consumer scanning can create new problems when results are not interpreted in clinical context.
That caution matters because it changes the risk profile from “is the technology cool” to “what happens after the scan.” In conversations with Business Insider, radiologists raised concerns that frequent full-body scanning can lead to incidental findings, false positives, anxiety, and unnecessary follow-up care if results are not handled like actual medical information. Put plainly: discovering more can mean finding more that was never going to matter, and triggering a cascade of tests, bills, and worry. That scaling ambition is where the second-order implications get serious for investors, operators, and anyone allocating capital to health tech. If 50,000 scanners go live by 2031, you do not just deploy devices. You deploy a workflow: how scans are performed, how data is stored, how results are communicated, and who bears responsibility when the scan is wrong or ambiguous. Midjourney did not immediately respond to Business Insider's questions about billing, health data storage, or how the technology uses AI, which means key operational and compliance pieces are still undefined in public reporting. Those open questions are not small. In healthcare, missing the “how” is often what turns promising tech into expensive mess.
The Silicon Valley response has reflected that split between wow and worry. Elon Musk wrote that it was “cool” on X. Ben Parr, COO of Moltbook, said he tested out the tech and saw inside his arm. Hank Green, a YouTuber and science communicator, had a more mixed reaction, writing in an X blog post that he had “some frustrations” with how Midjourney promoted the product. He added that while ultrasound may be promising, it is not a replacement for MRI, CT, colonoscopy, or other scans, and he emphasized the basic truth that different scans fill different gaps. That comment lands because it reframes what executives should be measuring: not whether ultrasound can wow, but whether the system can reliably and appropriately answer defined clinical questions.
So what should decision-makers take from all this? Midjourney is betting that the future of imaging can be consumer-friendly, fast, and maybe even spa-adjacent, while regulators and clinicians demand careful evidence, clinical context, and safeguards against false positives. If Midjourney executes well, it could lower barriers to body awareness and create a new category at the intersection of wellness and diagnostics. If it executes poorly, the same speed and scale could multiply incidental findings, anxiety, and follow-up care at a pace that outstrips clinical capacity.
