Orcas in the Gulf of California were filmed coordinating to ram sunfish until the carcasses exploded into small fragments, according to a new paper in Frontiers in Ethology. For decision-makers watching science credibility, conservation, and risk around human-ocean activity, it reinforces that killer whales use complex, possibly culturally learned hunting behaviors.
There are plenty of headlines about orcas ramming boats. But the fresh footage out of the Gulf of California is something else entirely: orcas coordinating to ram sunfish with enough force that the carcasses exploded into small fragments.
The behavior matters because it is not just “use force to get food.” While orcas have been known to use force to remove flesh from prey, this new example is distinct enough that the researchers describe it as a different kind of behavior, potentially tied to social interaction, play, or practice as a mode of social learning. The work appears in a new paper published in the journal Frontiers in Ethology.
So why does a method of ripping open a fish matter beyond marine biology nerds? Because this is the kind of culturally learned behavior that can scale through a population. Scientists have described in recent years numerous accounts of orcas ramming boats, and in some cases sinking them. They believe such behavior can be culturally learned, passed down through generations. In other words, if the behavior is taught and reinforced socially, it can persist even when it is not the most efficient way to hunt.
In the paper, co-author Kathryn Ayres of Beneath The Waves, a nonprofit organization promoting ocean health, is quoted saying, “We think this may help younger orcas feed more easily, or it could also just be for fun.” She adds, “Orcas are known for playing with their food.” That framing is important for readers outside the field because it changes how you interpret animal behavior. Instead of assuming every burst of aggression is strictly about hunger, the paper argues for a wider set of motivations, including learning and play.
The researchers also place the filmed sunfish behavior inside a broader pattern of cooperative hunting and interaction strategies. Orcas engage in cooperative hunting strategies that can involve striking or killing animals. Sometimes the prey is eaten, and sometimes it is not. That flexibility supports the idea that some actions can function as social interaction, play, or practice, not only immediate consumption.

That matters for the operators and regulators who deal with marine traffic, tourism, fisheries, and any activity that brings humans into the same space where orcas decide to practice, play, or hunt. A boat interaction is not the same event as a sunfish carcass exploding into small fragments, but the behavioral logic can rhyme: force applied in a coordinated way, possibly reinforced through social learning.
Regulatory and conservation circles often emphasize measurable outcomes: sightings, incident logs, harm mitigation, and monitoring. But the new paper pushes the underlying narrative toward behavior as tradition, not a one-off accident. If younger orcas learn feeding and tactics by watching and mimicking older ones, then changes in local orca social patterns could affect how often risky behaviors appear. That means protocols designed only around “when an orca is hungry” may miss the bigger driver, which could be practice and teaching.
For executives and boards in ocean-facing industries, the strategic stake is simple: incident risk, reputational risk, and compliance risk can rise when you underestimate how quickly learned behavior can persist. This paper does not offer a policy shortcut, and it does not replace safety planning. But it does supply a clearer reason to take behavioral complexity seriously. Orcas are not only predators. They are social learners. And in the Gulf of California, that social learning can look like turning a hunt into an explosive lesson.
