Spectrum's second shot: Europe's first orbital launch from European soil today
Isar Aerospace's test hop from Norway could end a history of zero orbital launches from European land.

Isar Aerospace is attempting to put its Spectrum rocket into orbit from European soil for the first time, with a launch window opening at 4 p.m. EDT today. If successful, the flight would close an orbital-launch gap that has kept Europe dependent on remote pads.
No rocket has ever reached orbit from European soil, and Isar Aerospace is betting a two-stage answer today. The launch window opens at 4 p.m. EDT (2000 GMT; 10 p.m. local time) from Andøya Space Center in northern Norway, where the German company sat Spectrum rocket on the pad. If Spectrum performs, it becomes the first vehicle to reach orbit from European land, and managers across the small-satellite and launcher world get a new supply chain variable to price. Sending Spectrum on its second impulse. The two-stage, 28-meter-tall (95-foot) rocket first flew in March 2025 under the code name "Going Full Spectrum" - that debut ended in the ocean less than a minute after liftoff. A coroner's two-month investigation by Isar zeroed in on an unintended vent valve opening and a loss of attitude control at the start of a roll maneuver as the root of the failure. The investigation resulted in engineering changes that Isar has since folded into the new flight, called "Onward and Upward." That manifest includes five cubesats and a non-deployable scientific experiment, which means this is no longer mere machinery; the vehicle is carrying customer payload.
But first it has to cross a finish line that has proven unusually brittle. The January window was voided by a pressurization valve problem, and scheduled launch attempts in March were knocked down by weather and small boats. The boating gate closed further when a leak degraded the segments of a composite overwrapped pressure vessel on April 9, and a June 15 try was paused after "off-nominal behavior in the vehicle's fluid systems," according to the company. Only now, with the fluid system issue apparently fixed, is Spectrum back on the pad with a concrete go / no-go.
This is the point where most observers accelerate their logic: a successful mission from Isar's 28-ton total flight is essentially in the drone. That massive prop box is just half of the story. Spectrum ho around 1,000 kilograms (about 2,200 pounds) to low Earth orbit, which puts it squarely in the small- and medium-satellite class. And it is built, strategically, to fly frequently. The phrase serves as a bureaucratic version of comfort: a second flight is an alternative to a per one. But the history is not just aesthetic.
