OpenAI’s $230 Codex Micro sold in 12 hours, now a $1,850 eBay listing tests demand
What looks like a novelty keyboard is turning into a pricing signal for OpenAI hardware, voice, and developer trust.

OpenAI debuted the Codex Micro, a $230 square keyboard built with Work Louder, on July 15 and it sold out in about 12 hours. The immediate flip pricing on eBay, alongside how OpenAI is using it as a voice and hardware testing ground, matters to decision-makers tracking whether AI platforms can differentiate beyond software.
OpenAI’s first hardware device, the Codex Micro, debuted at $230 on July 15. It sold out the day it went on sale in about 12 hours. Now, some buyers who got one are reselling it on eBay at prices that look completely divorced from reality, including a listing for $1,850.
That gap between retail and resale is the headline, but the deeper story is what it signals for OpenAI and for anyone trying to build durable differentiation in AI. The Micro is a square keyboard with a 12-key pad, a joystick, and neon lights, targeted specifically at computer coders who use OpenAI’s Codex tool. It was developed as a one-off project with boutique keyboard firm Work Louder, and it’s separate from the company’s reportedly forthcoming consumer “AI companion” gadget expected next year. Demand for the Micro did not care about that distinction: it disappeared quickly, and eBay prices started climbing and then cooling off as more inventory reached the secondary market.
Fortune reports that looking at past sales on eBay, the biggest bounty was $1,250, listed on July 16, one day after release. After that early spike, prices steadily declined, with units selling for around $800 to $1,000 in the week after release. Today, they are going for around $450. That’s still well above the $230 list price, even after the initial frenzy. Most sellers are in the U.S., though some are located in France, the Netherlands, and Ireland. Importantly, one $1,850 listing exists now, but the seller is unlikely to get it, based on how the market cleared in earlier trades.
So what is the Codex Micro actually doing to justify any of this? It is designed to make coders’ interactions with Codex feel less like “wait, what’s happening?” and more like “I can see the system working.” An LED ring around the keyboard lights up red, orange, green, or blue to signal whether there’s an error or whether the AI agent is still working on a task, for example. The dial is there to adjust the AI’s effort level for a given task. The joystick can initiate common coding workflows such as debugging an error or refactoring code.
If you’re sitting in a leadership role, the trick here is to recognize the Micro is not being sold as a general productivity keyboard. It is a purpose-built interaction layer for a specific workflow: developers using Codex. That’s why some programmers were quick to call it superfluous. One Redditor said you can get a programmable keyboard with a knob for 18 bucks, and another pointed to open-source software to program any keyboard with similar functions. Even if you discount those critiques, the Micro’s real value proposition is less about raw hardware specs and more about packaging a tight loop between user intent and AI execution. At $450 on average now, it is also a collectible status item, an artifact from what feels like the dawn of the AI age when OpenAI is still a default reference point.
OpenAI, for its part, has no plans to restock the device. But Work Louder, which manufactured the product in partnership with OpenAI, sells its own version on its website featuring the Codex integration, just without the OpenAI branding. That matters because it tells you the Micro is both a marketing moment and a proof-of-capability for the underlying interaction design. The product aims to test two concepts the company cares about for upcoming hardware: Hardware as a physical way to interact with OpenAI’s software, and voice as an interface.
Once the Micro devices were released, OpenAI started monitoring user feedback and discussing it regularly in a Slack channel, with Di Genova also part of that conversation. The Micro has a microphone button: pressing it provides easy access to speak to the AI with verbal instructions. That aligns with something OpenAI did last week as well, when it released a digital microphone button for ChatGPT Work, a desktop app that merges ChatGPT and Codex. OpenAI co-founder and president Greg Brockman has described voice as “the interface of the future” for computing, arguing that it brings the computer closer to you rather than forcing you to contort around the machine. He also predicted that people will look back on “clicking and typing” as a “phase.”
The feasibility of doing detailed tasks exclusively through voice is not guaranteed. But in an industry where most differentiation is still software updates and model improvements, voice and hardware are a way to change the user experience without changing the underlying model overnight. That might be why many in the AI industry see hardware as a path to differentiation. Di Genova pointed to a Steve Jobs quote: “If you want to make great hardware, make software,” and then flipped it: he thinks the industry is in a backswing where software builders can now make hardware, because “basically basically there’s no moat anymore.”
Under the hood, the Micro also traces back to OpenAI’s merchandise operation. The idea originated on OpenAI’s merchandise team, which intended to sell the product in its online store, Supply Co. That store began as a private place for OpenAI employees to grab company swag, then briefly opened to the public in December 2025 for OpenAI’s tenth anniversary. Quartz reports that social media promptly took over. The Wall Street Journal said some people called items like minimalist hoodies and tote bags “tasteslop” and “nerd merch.” Mike Di Genova, co-founder of Work Louder, said that OpenAI got heat for its merch, which pushed the team to “step up their merch game.” OpenAI reached out later that month to develop a developer-focused product for early adopters.
OpenAI and Work Louder finalized the concept in a few months, and OpenAI placed a large order. Di Genova said he expected it to take at least a month to sell through inventory, laughing that it was limited stock but OpenAI “purchased a lot.” Neither OpenAI nor Work Louder would disclose the exact number of units. The Micro, then, is a test: a platform experiment that doubles as a market read.
For executives and board members watching OpenAI and similar players, the eBay pricing is a distraction and a clue at the same time. The distraction is that resale is not revenue, and a single $1,850 listing does not equal sustainable monetization. The clue is that even when the product is “prosaic” (a keyboard) and not the next big consumer device, a tightly targeted developer tool can still trigger scarcity dynamics. When AI companies pitch hardware, they are really pitching a new interface, and the Micro is one of the clearest early data points that developers will pay attention to interfaces if the integration is real, the workflow is obvious, and the hardware makes the AI feel less like magic and more like a system you can steer.
